Christmas 2009

This year was our first family Christmas at home. The other 6 we were either apart or somewhere else visiting. Banner year for us! We're still ironing out what our traditions will be, but I think we've settled on a few main ones.

On Christmas Eve we made some delightful green, red, and swirly sugar cookies for St. Nick (and of course ourselves). This will definitely be an every year thing. Christmas cookies on Christmas Eve. I don't know if they'll be sugar cookies every time, but there shall be cookies! We put out hot cocoa, 2 special snowman cookies, and a carrot for Santa and crew. We also opened one family present. The boys slept in a tent in their room. We put bells on the door so that Santa would hear them if they come out... and you know what that means, HE'LL LEAVE! :O During the night Bosley ran past their room to his bed, jingling his tags all the way, and we heard excited whispers and giggles. We told them you better go to sleep! Santa will be here any second! That's why we're going to bed now! They were back in the tent with the quickness.

On Christmas Day we opened all the other gifts, saving Santa's for last. Santa always gives one big present and fills stockings for us. Santa brought Noah a huge transformer that's actually 6 transformers put together. Tristan got a big playmobil airplane. There was a whole lot more... it'll be strewn all over the place for the next few months. A playmobil castle for Noah, an Imaginext helicopter for Tristan, walkie-talkies, transformers, a tent with tunnel, baseball bat, Bakugan, motorcycles, Mr. Potato Head... they're so spoiled. They had a wonderful Christmas :)

Josh made lamb for dinner and I made sage sausage stuffing to go with it and some green beans. Lamb dinner will definitely be a new tradition of ours. Lamb is expensive back in the states, but it's only once a year :) Everything was delicious. I meant to make an apple pie, but I never got around to it. I will probably still make one sometime during the holiday break. My apple pie rocks (thank you allrecipes.com!).

The kids are destroying the playroom and putting it back together every day. They got the tent out and I connected the tunnels together. They've been crawling and rolling and yelling and having a grand ol' time. I took some videos (they're on the sidebar). Even Brennan joined in the fun! He crawled all the way through the tunnels twice.

Kevin is visiting and will be here until mid-January. HOORAY!! We're so happy we had such a close friend here with us to bring in the New Year. We all went to a little house party and played Taboo, met some new people, and learned about the traditions of the Madrileno New Year celebration. We've been having a lot of fun just relaxing and talking, but are planning a few trips while he's here.

Happy Holidays! I hope you guys are doing good! I was reading your blog and wanted to share that my brother loves lamb. It was funny three Christmas ago(the last one we were in Ohio for) dave tried it and hated it haha. I guess it's a tradition for our family to, but not Dave. I hope everything is going well! I can't believe Brennan is so big now. Is he crawling or cruising now?

Hurricane Sandy

This will be a gleefully uneventful post, but I thought I should at least inform everyone of our whereabouts during Frankenstorm. On Friday the landfall predictions were further south, which had the eye passing near our tiny town after obliterating Dover, DE.  We happen to be surrounded by water.  The Patuxent River on one side, Chesapeake Bay on the other, plenty of swamps and creeks in between.  Not a good prospect. Josh and I had gone out that night to try and secure supplies and already, there were no batteries or flashlights.  We also don't have a grill and thought "we'll try Lowe's tomorrow"I mean, most people already own grills... right?  Everything in our house is run on electricity (including the water pump for the well) except for the fireplace.  I don't know what builders are thinking when they do that.  I at least want a gas stove and water heater!  So, anyways.  We got a few hours of sleep before trying to brave the crowds...

Germany

Noah and I are having a great time out in Germany with Josh. The house we're sharing is amazing and the people are also amazing. The only thing we don't have is our own kitchen, but like I said, the people who live here (Josh's friends) are amazing so it's not even an issue. I've been cooking for everyone to try to thank them in some way. We haven't been to many places yet. It's hard to go anywhere with a baby who has a naptime and a husband who has a job. However!! We managed to make it out to Heidelberg to see the castle. It was awesome. the walk up to the castle mmmm castle Heidelberg down below Christmas is huge here. They've even got Christmas markets out in the parking lot in front of WalMart. We've been to Luisenplatz a few times in downtown Darmstadt to visit all the Christmas shops they have set up. It's like a Christmas flea market. Thus far all I've blown money on is candy... mmmm German candy is so delicious. It's...

Hiking on the Guadarrama Trail

As promised yesterday, I actually left the house and went on a hike with Mama C and Goober!  YAY! I was a bad Mommy and ill prepared to shield us from the hot Spanish sun so we all have a touch of sunburn.  Whoops.  It was fun though.  OK so here's where we began our journey.  You can see the bridge between the roundabout and the little house with a red roof (which is a restaurant).  All the cylindrical buildings were a plant nursery.  We walked over the bridge and past the nursery where we crossed the street and then started up the dirt path.  The other little building is literally a Gypsy Keep. Here's what it looked like from the road... and it was so ridiculously creepy, yet fascinating.  I don't know why there is always tons of junk in trees around gypsy places.  There was a gutted van in the backyard, a stroller jammed into a wall, shorts in the trees.  We both wanted to trespass, but the kids would have inevitably fal...
