Finally, the Cake!

I have a bit of a background story to tell about Tristan's 1st birthday cake. I picked up a banana cream pie for us to have as his cake from our local grocery store on the 14th (day after his actual birthday). We cut into it that night and all the whipped cream on top had soured... and I'm assuming the filling had also gone bad. I was so disappointed in Bi-Lo. I was determined to bring it back for a refund, but forgot bring it next time I went to the store. So, I just tossed it because it wasn't worth the gas to get my $5.99 back. Well as luck would have it, we were at Sam's and found the perfect cake! It had little sea creatures on it in honor of our trip to the aquarium :) We decided it was better late than never and finally enjoyed our cake last night. I couldn't NOT have 1st birthday cake pictures!!

I also had to share a couple more cute ones of Tristan's path of destruction and walking attempts. He is starting to walk a little tiny bit more on his own. He really is just much faster crawling and sees no point in being an upright mammal yet. Look at his little jeans falling off :) This kid is just too darn cute. He has me laughing all day.

Noah and Tristan have been interacting a lot more lately. Noah is such an amazing kid. He's really patient and loving with his baby brother. He shares with him and makes sure he's not getting into any trouble. They have their moments (like today when the cars and planes were out), but they are great friends! Noah has a sponge memory right now. We were watching "Spirit" yesterday and in the beginning scene they show Old Faithful erupting. I told him it was a geyser and when we watched it today he said "look Mommy a geyser!". He's quite impressive. We are delving into more complicated books and facts now. He's able to digest all kinds of information and regurgitate it at the right moments. It's exciting for me to see how his little mind is working. I am using this time to show him the more complicated stuff like... actual names of oceans instead of just "the ocean". Everything is important to him so he remembers. This week we're going to watch Planet Earth again. I think we're going to watch the Blue Planet disc first to reinforce the recent aquarium trip (thanks again Kevin for the series I LOVE it!!). We'll see how much he remembers. FYI everyone, when your kids start to ask questions they already know the answers to, they're looking for more information and are ready to soak up whatever you give them! I am expecting a huge vocabulary explosion. Poor Noah is going to be exceedingly bored in kindergarten.

What a cute cake, I love it!
Tristan looks like such a big boy taking steps :)

We just watched the movie Spirit a couple weeks ago. I really love it & so did the girls. Ava has been into getting things with her make believe lasso now. She ropes me in & the "pulls me around the room, haha.

I agree about the vocabulary. I have been doing that with Ava too and she really does remember things I wouldn't expect her to.

Happy Birthday to Tristan! What a little man he is... It's always fun to come to your blog for a huge dose of cuteness! And I love the new look you have here... I've been gone a long time and I'm only just beginning to try to catch up with everyone.

Very bad day today

I got a horrible phone call early this morning from someone I used to work with. A friend of mine, who was stationed in Iraq, was killed yesterday in her sleep when her trailer was hit. SGT Trista Moretti was an amazing person. She had an impact on so many lives in so many places. It's going to be tough for everyone (like me) who can't make it to Jersey to say goodbye. I've been crying off and on all damn day. It seems so unfair. I hate this war and don't agree with it, but I don't think she died in vain. She died for everyone else out there. They fight for each other, not a cause, not their government. That's what I miss about the Army. I miss my comrades. Trista was hilarious and beautiful and had this great Jersey accent. We used to play word games and gossip and eat lunch together every day. We would laugh all day long while we "worked" haha. I remember when she first got to the unit I told everyone some bitchy chick with an accent was in the...

Hurricane Sandy

This will be a gleefully uneventful post, but I thought I should at least inform everyone of our whereabouts during Frankenstorm. On Friday the landfall predictions were further south, which had the eye passing near our tiny town after obliterating Dover, DE.  We happen to be surrounded by water.  The Patuxent River on one side, Chesapeake Bay on the other, plenty of swamps and creeks in between.  Not a good prospect. Josh and I had gone out that night to try and secure supplies and already, there were no batteries or flashlights.  We also don't have a grill and thought "we'll try Lowe's tomorrow"I mean, most people already own grills... right?  Everything in our house is run on electricity (including the water pump for the well) except for the fireplace.  I don't know what builders are thinking when they do that.  I at least want a gas stove and water heater!  So, anyways.  We got a few hours of sleep before trying to brave the crowds...

Hiking on the Guadarrama Trail

As promised yesterday, I actually left the house and went on a hike with Mama C and Goober!  YAY! I was a bad Mommy and ill prepared to shield us from the hot Spanish sun so we all have a touch of sunburn.  Whoops.  It was fun though.  OK so here's where we began our journey.  You can see the bridge between the roundabout and the little house with a red roof (which is a restaurant).  All the cylindrical buildings were a plant nursery.  We walked over the bridge and past the nursery where we crossed the street and then started up the dirt path.  The other little building is literally a Gypsy Keep. Here's what it looked like from the road... and it was so ridiculously creepy, yet fascinating.  I don't know why there is always tons of junk in trees around gypsy places.  There was a gutted van in the backyard, a stroller jammed into a wall, shorts in the trees.  We both wanted to trespass, but the kids would have inevitably fal...
